Brazilian mining conglomerate Vale, the world's leading iron ore producer, says it is negotiating with its main clients, Luxembourg-based Arcelor Mittal and Taiwan's China Steel, to give them a more favorable pricing system.

"We came under pressure from our clients for a change in the pricing system," Jose Carlos Martins, Vale's executive officer for ferrous mineral, said during a company event in London that was webcast on Vale's website Thursday.

Arcelor Mittal's over billion-dollar venture meant to rejuvenate the economy promised better jobs and salaries for many unemployed Liberians. But the multi-national company has already earned the reputation of unfairness and bad labour deals amongst workers as it subcontracts many of its jobs to other companies paying Liberian far lower wages with no job security. According to other sources, the company, when recently asked for documents as evidence that it was abiding by its contractual agreements of yielding certain percentage of jobs to Liberians, reportedly said its document in this regards were in London. Several workers interviewed in Nimba recently expressed despair over what they claim are a terrible conditions.
