Love it or hate it, the automotive industry of today is not lacking for its exercises in reviving old nameplates. The trend ranges from Mini
to Maybach
, from Dodge Dart
to Dodge Challenger
. And the French are certainly not immune. Citroën
revived its fabled DS
moniker for a range of premium hatchbacks, and Renault
- most of all - has been mulling bringing back the Alpine
for years now.

Arguably just as central to Renault's performance heritage as the recently revived Gordini
line, Alpine made mid-engined sportscars with Renault mechanicals starting in the 1950s and discontinued four decades later. Its most famous model, however, was the A110 (pictured above), which is now celebrating its 50th anniversary. And if a new report from Autocar
is accurate, Renault has no intention of letting the occasion slip by unnoticed.

In fact, the French automaker is reportedly planning an Alpine concept car to unveil at the Paris Motor Show

next fall. But the question remains whether there's any production potential with such a concept. The French are known for producing some rather intriguing show cars - sportscars in particular - that never seem to get very far from the show stand, from the GTbyCitroën
to the Renault DeZir
.

Whether Renault can make the business case - without the North American market, at that - to take on the sports car establishment remains to be seen, but having the Nissan
product bin to raid certainly couldn't hurt.
<a

World champion Sebastien Loeb was poised to clinch a sixth victory in the Monte Carlo Rally after building up a huge lead of 2min 41.6sec on Saturday.

French driver Loeb steered his Citroen DS3 coolly around Saturday's four mountain stages in the principality, happy to cut out the risks and keep his advantage.

Dani Sordo continues to hold second in his Mini but Petter Solberg closed to within 19.1sec of the Spaniard in his Ford Fiesta after winning three of the day's four stages.

Breaking: Peugeot exiting Le Mans racing effective immediately

PSA Peugeot Citroën
has announced the French automaker will leave Le Mans
racing indefinitely. Reuters

reports the manufacturer cites financial issues as the reason for the drastic move, saying Peugeot
will now focus its efforts on improving its sales performance in 2012. For its part, Peugeot has issued an official statement confirming the development on its motorsports site, which you can read after the jump.

Peugeot is currently Europe's second-largest vehicle manufacturer, though the company has suffered a string of thinning profit reports in recent months. Last year, Phillippe Varin, Peugeot's chief executive, announced a plan to save the company $1.03 billion in 2012 through a variety of tactics, including 6,000 job cuts. We now know the company's impressive Le Mans racing effort is a casualty of cost savings as well.

Of all the rivalries in motorsports, few have been as entertaining or heated as the one that blossomed between Peugeot and Audi
at the 24 Hours of Le Mans

. Peugeot swiped the crown from its German rivals in 2009 with its futuristic, diesel-powered 908 prototype, though Audi has won the legendary race seven out of the last eight years. That loss, however, forced Audi to abandon the open cockpit design of its R15 and earlier models in favor of a closed dome on the new R18
.

Interestingly enough, Reuters
reports Peugeot sister company Citroën
won't turn its back on the World Rally Championship

Teams come and teams go from the World Rally Championship
. But while this season will see the arrival of Volkswagen
and Mini

on the WRC stage as newcomers, one perennial challenger that will return is Ford
.

Having replaced the long-serving Focus
RS last season, Ford will carry on with the new Fiesta
RS for another crack at the title it narrowly lost once again to Citroën
last season. No fewer than twelve examples will be on the stage this season, but only two will be fielded by the factory-backed Ford World Rally Team, which has just revealed their new livery for the upcoming season at the Autosport International show in Birmingham, England.

Castrol returns once again as the main sponsor, its logo dominating the new color scheme which will be sported by returning five-time rally winner Jari-Matti Latvala (with co-driver Miika Anttila) and former champion Petter Solberg (with Chris Patterson). The latter replaces perennial runner-up Mikko Hirvonen, who left for Citroën this season. Check out the new livery in the high-res image gallery and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Ford gears up with new Fiesta RS WRC livery

France's largest carmaker PSA Peugeot Citroen said Thursday it may form an alliance with another auto group, as it announced that weak demand in Europe dragged its 2011 sales down by 1.5 percent.

"We don't exclude the possibility of accelerating what we're doing through a broader alliance," said Frederic Saint-Geours, the head of the group's Peugeot and Citroen brands.

Official: Citroen turns utility into style with new C3 Picasso Code

Some may look at a utilitarian vehicle like the Citroën C3 Picasso
and wonder why bother sprucing it up, but Citroën
begs to differ. After launching the Blackcherry edition
just over a year ago, the French automaker has returned with the new Code edition you see here.

Available in white, red, blue or grey, the C3 Picasso Code packs a host of visual enhancements that inject the little minivan with an added dose of style: things like white or red-trimmed 17-inch alloys, chrome insets on the bumper and door handles, glossy black bumpers and door mirrors and more. All that costs just £300 more (in the UK) over the base C3 Picasso equipped with the same fuel-efficient 90-horsepower diesel engine and manual transmission. Follow the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Citroen turns utility into style with new C3 Picasso Code

Citroën
and Peugeot

have released the first volley of information and images on their refreshed C1
and 107
runabouts. The Citroen C1 will bow with a new face, complete with a shorter hood, redesigned foglamp housings and new LED daytime running lights. The vehicle's rear valance has also received a few design touches to differentiate it from the previous year model. Buyers can expect to find the same 68-horsepower three-cylinder gasoline engine bolted to a manual transmission under the hood.

Not surprisingly, its mechanical twin, the Peugeot 107, has received a similar once over. Designers have graced the three-door with a reworked front fascia that features a new front bumper, foglight housings and LED daytime running lights, just like its Citroën cousin. Peugeot will also offer the 107 in three trim levels: Access, Active and Allure.

The Citroën C1 will be on display at the Brussels Motor Show

starting on January 10, and it's probably fair to assume the Pug will make the scene there as well. Hit the jump for press releases on both of these small hatchbacks.
Continue reading Citroën C1 / Peugeot 107 twins refreshed

Mini
has reportedly confirmed its 2012 World Rally Championship
entry after initially missing the December 19 entry deadline. According to Autosport

, the delay may have had something to do with concerns Mini parent company BMW

had over television coverage of the sport in Germany. Now it would seem the FIA is working to address those issues and Mini is once again slated to join both Ford
and Citroën
as full manufacturers in the series. The delay may have been a tactical move by BMW and Mini to convince series promoters to come up with more amicable coverage terms.

As it sits, Mini will campaign a John Cooper Works WRC in all 13 rounds, though it remains unclear whether driver Dani Sordo will be behind the wheel at every stage. Mini may look to save some cash by turning to a private driver in some of the more expensive rounds like New Zealand. Either way, Mini is slated to return to the WRC at the Monte Carlo Rally starting on January 17.
<a

Report: Mini dumps rally driver due to budget issues

We were pretty surprised to find out just a few days ago that Mini
's new rally team had, for some reason, failed to sign up
for next year's World Rally Championship
. "Inexplicable" is what we called it at the time, but the latest reports coming out of the UK where the team is based could serve to cast some light on the situation.

Not only has the outfit - run by the rally gurus at Prodrive
(who have, in the past, run Subaru's rally team, as well as Aston Martin
and Ferrari
works efforts at Le Mans
) - missed the filing deadline, but they'll also reportedly let their best driver go. The reason? Funding, apparently. Although the team supposedly benefits from factory backing, a lack of sponsorship has reportedly left the team strapped for cash.

As a result, Northern Irish driver Kris Meeke

- who was called up to the WRC team after claiming the 2009 title in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge - and his co-pilot have reportedly been released from their three-year contract after only one year. Meeke's seat will reportedly be auctioned off to the highest bidder - that is, whoever comes with sponsorship dollars, pounds or euros already lined up. Former Citroën
WRC driver Dani Sordo, however, will reportedly carry on with the team, assuming it can secure its entry for the upcoming season.

How a factory-backed team like Mini's could find itself without enough funding has us scratching our heads, but our compatriots over at Autocar
point to parent-company BMW
's costly new entry into DTM
next season as a potential answer.
<a

It is one of the key engines of the French economy and a historically vital industry, but France's auto sector is heading into 2012 amid dire forecasts for its future and warnings of major job losses.

Accounting -- directly or indirectly -- for a quarter of the national workforce, vehicle manufacturing is one of the gems of French industry and the country is home to two global auto giants, PSA Peugeot Citroen and Renault.

Petition to shorten gray market import exemption fails

Because we the enthusiast people didn't gather behind the effort to lower the gray market importation limit
from 25 to 15 years, the We The People petition
filed a couple of months ago has failed. In order to get the Executive Branch to consider such requests, each petition needs 25,000 signatures and this one didn't get it. That isn't to say the decision would have been overturned, but now it won't even get a look.

It is said that Mercedes-Benz helped get the original law passed the eighties, which means you can only now import the car - the 500 SEL - that prompted Mercedes to fight for it. Or there's always a 1986 Citroen CX or 1986 Nissan Skyline R31 to leave you thoroughly underwhelmed with your options.
<a

	<img
There's something about the Suzuki Regina Concept that we like. A lot. For starters, it has a white roof. What's cool about that, you ask? Well, after Ford stole the idea from Mini for the Flex, nothing. But darn it if it doesn't look good here. With those rear fender skirts, we're actually seeing a good bit of Citroën DS in Suzuki's stylish little econobox, and as we all know, the DS is the most beautiful car of all time.

The Regina Concept, on the other hand, is just an idea for a 1,600-pound sedan that gets 75 miles per gallon. Suzuki didn't share details about the powertrain, but Autocar is reporting that the Regina Concept is powered by a turbocharged, 800-cc gasoline engine, and uses both start-stop and regenerative braking tech to achieve such lofty fuel economy.

A car that light could be powered by a leaf blower and still be fun to drive, so we're giving this one a thumbs up. Go ahead and build it, Suzuki, because you know someone will figure out a way to put a small-block Chevy in it. Hit the jump for Suzuki's short press release.

Report: Valentino Rossi hopes for future in rally racing [UPDATE: w/video]

Valentino Rossi

, certainly the greatest motorcycle racer of our generation, has no concrete plans to leave MotoGP
. In fact, after an extremely disappointing first season with Ducati
in 2011, we'd wager he'll be sticking around for at least a few more years to prove he's still got what it takes to win at the highest level when competing on competitive machinery.

But, as we've heard in the past, Rossi would love nothing more than to "retire" by taking a break from two-wheeled competition and settling into something with four. And while we know The Doctor has proven quite adept at piloting a Ferrari Formula One machine

, the likeable Italian apparently prefers to rally. In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport,
Rossi said:

I'm happy, it was one of my best rallies, even if I had won it the past. Getting ahead of Loeb in two specials really turned me on... I'll do a few more years in MotoGP, then I'd race in rallies: these machines are really fun to drive because they have less electronics.

A future career in rally racing wouldn't be a stretch for Rossi - the motorcycle racer finished in second place in a Ford Fiesta

RS WRC, a mere 24 seconds behind eight-time world champion Sebastien Loeb's Citroen DS3
.

*UPDATE: Video of Rossi's rally exploits added after the break.

French manufacturer Citroen on Thursday played down claims by Qatari racing driver Nasser Al-Attiyah that he would be competing for their storied rally team in the 2012 world rally championship (WRC).

Al-Attiyah, who has competed in shooting events at four Olympic Games and won the Dakar Rally in January for Volkswagen, claimed Wednesday from Doha he had reached agreement with Citroen to be their third driver for next season.

Official: Sebastien Loeb seals record eighth World Rally Championship despite off-track crash

You take the good with the bad. It's a motto that applies to any number of situations in life, and certainly does in motorsports. That's what Sebastien Loeb
and his longtime co-pilot Daniel Elena found this weekend in Wales.

In the midst of a hard-fought battle with Jari-Matti Latvala in a Ford Fiesta RS

, Loeb and Elena were on their way back to the paddock when they collided over a blind crest with another car. The Citroën

DS3 WRC was damaged virtually beyond repair, but the position in which they retired was still good enough to clinch a record eighth drivers' title in World Rally Championship
to join the manufacturers' title claimed for the team last month.

The Citroën mechanics managed to piece the car back together enough to pose for some photos, which you can see in the high-res image gallery. But even if it wasn't the ideal picture-perfect finish for the undisputed dominant force in rallying, it still didn't stop Loeb from celebrating his place as the most accomplished driver in all of motorsport.
Continue reading Sebastien Loeb seals record eighth World Rally Championship despite off-track crash

Typically when an automaker makes a new rally car - whether for gravel, sand, snow or ice - it's based on... well, a car. Usually a hatchback, like the Subaru Impreza
, Citroën DS3
or Volkswagen Polo

. Lately, some have been going a different route with crossover-based rally cars, but Renault
's latest is neither hatchback nor sedan nor crossover. It's a minivan.

After contesting the Andros Trophy for two years with a specially-prepared Dacia
Duster - which also formed the basis for its Pikes Peak challenger

- the French automaker's Romanian budget brand is returning for a third winter season to the French ice racing series with a new beast based on the Lodgy MPV. The production version of the minivan isn't set to be unveiled itself until the Geneva Motor Show
in March.

The resulting Lodgy Glace (the latter from the French for "ice") was prepared by independent contractors like Tork Engineering and Sodemo under the watchful eye of Renault Sport Technologies. Its tubular steel frame packs a Nissan
-sourced 3.0-liter 24-valve V6 engine mounted amidship and sending 355 horsepower to all four wheels via a SADEV six-speed sequential gearbox.

The season kicks off on December 3 at Val Thorens, where four-time F1 champion Alain Prost and his son Nicolas, together with ice-racing veteran Evens Stievenart, will be taking on all comers. Follow the jump for the full press release and scope out the quarter of high-res images for a closer look at their new ride.
Continue reading Dacia challenging Andros Trophy with new Lodgy MPV ice racer

As is generally the case, we once again find ourselves swooning over the European Honda Civic
hatchback that made its world debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show
. The new-for-2012 North American-spec Civic hasn't exactly resonated well with us
(or the rest of the media
), and while we haven't had the chance to drive the new Euro Civic, our thought is that it simply must be better than the milquetoast slab of economy car that we've been served here in the United States.

We've always liked the Euro Civic's five-door shape, with its rear door handles integrated into the C-pillar. But as for the rest of the 2012 model's design elements, there's a bit of overall weirdness, especially around its rump. Nevertheless, it'll likely do well in Europe, where bold designs are more widely accepted (just look at anything by Peugeot
or Citroën
).

Powering the Civic are a range of three different engines - two fueled by gasoline, one by diesel. The top-end diesel powerplant is Honda's 2.2-liter engine with 148 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and below that, the two gasoline engines measure in at 1.4 and 1.8 liters, putting out 99 hp and 140 hp, respectively.

Take some time to scroll through our giant high-res gallery of the 2012 Euro Civic. After that, follow the jump to watch a promo video for the new car and check out Honda's indulgently long press release.
Continue reading Pics Aplenty: Honda releases a boatload on the 2012 Euro Civic [w/video]

The U.S. auto industry seems to be picking up nicely, but the same can't be said for Europe. Ford just announced that it lost $100 million a month in the market over the third quarter, and PSA Peugeot-Citroën SA
didn't fare much better.

Automotive News
reports that the French auto conglomerate is looking to cut fixed costs by 800 million euros ($1.1 billion USD) next year, and job cuts will be part of the plan. PSA will reportedly terminate 6,000 European jobs next year, with 1,000 cuts to manufacturing, 2,500 lost contractors and another 2,500 from sales, marketing, research and IT.

The auto market in Europe has suffered from a rise in pricing pressures. PSA felt the pinch with a 1.6 percent drop in automotive revenue during the quarter. Overall revenue actually increased by 3.5 percent due to PSA's majority ownership of parts maker Faurecia SA. PSA has changed its outlook for 2011 from "clearly positive" to something closer to break even.
<a

Official: Skoda hints at what's to come from Volkswagen with S2000 WRC title

    href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/off-road/">Off-Road, Racing

To the outsider, it would be all too easy to forget that the FIA World Rally Championship
has more than one class. Just like Le Mans
endurance racing has various LMP and GT racing categories, and NASCAR

has the Sprint Cup, Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series, so too does the WRC have more than one tier. So while the Sebastien Loeb and the Citroën

World Rally Team were locking up their seventh title in the top tier of the championship, Skoda
took its first title in the Super 2000 category as its Finnish crew Juho Hänninen and Mikko Markkula won took a class win and 10th overall in the RACC Rally of Spain this past weekend.

So what, who cares, you ask? Well you'd be forgiven for dismissing an overseas automaker (whose products we don't even get here) winning a second-tier rally series that doesn't come here, either. (Mexico's the closest stage on this year's calendar.) But we'll tell you why it matters: Skoda's sister (or parent) company Volkswagen
is entering the top-tier WRC next season with the new Polo R
. And while VW has enjoyed much success in rally-raid events like Dakar, the WRC is an entirely different beast.

In order to prepare for its assault on the most world's foremost rally series, Volkswagen has been looking to Skoda's program to test out everything from machinery to personnel. And given that Skoda - whose motorsport division celebrates its 110th anniversary this year - has come out on top, we could be looking at a very serious contender from Wolfsburg for next year's championship.
Continue reading Skoda hints at what's to come from Volkswagen with S2000 WRC title

Official: Citroen claims seventh WRC title on back of Loeb win in Spain

If there was ever any doubt, let it now be put to rest, as Citroën

has claimed its seventh Manufacturers' Title - its fourth in a row - in the World Rally Championship
.

The results were sealed when multiple champion Sebastien Loeb

and his co-driver Daniel Elena won this past weekend's Rally of Spain. The victory ensured that the Citroën World Rally Team could not be caught by Ford
, even though there is still one round to go before the 13-rally calendar draws to a close in Wales next month.

Although the Manufacturers' Title is all tied up, however, the Drivers' Title is still in contention. Loeb holds an eight-point lead over his nearest rival, Mikko Hirvonen. Sebastien Ogier in the other Citroën DS3 WRC was also in contention for the title until his car broke down with engine problems.

That leaves Loeb in the lead for his eighth consecutive world championship, but with Hirvonen not far behind in his Fiesta RS, nothing's for sure just yet. Details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Citroen claims seventh WRC title on back of Loeb win in Spain
