An Aveo By Any Other Name Is, Indeed, Sweet

Whether General Motors likes it or not, the Sonic story starts in 2004, when GM decided to import a cheap, crummy little econobox from Korea. A product of its newest subsidiary, Daewoo , the Chevrolet Aveo had few charms. But it was available as a five-door hatchback, one of the few on the market at the time, and its starting sticker price was under $10,000. It was enough of a pitch that the car sold - and stuck around.

Some of us actually developed a modicum of affection for the little piece of junk. It's not every new car that you can use and abuse and care not a whit about. If GM had marketed the Aveo as a disposable product, meant to be driven hard and left for dead, it might have disappointed fewer people. Instead, the Aveo was famously named the "Least Satisfying" vehicle of 2007 in a Consumer Reports survey.

Hundreds of thousands of Aveos have been dumped here over the years, often into rental car fleets where they would have even greater opportunity to reflect poorly on GM. The company sold some 48,000 Aveos in 2010, over 28,000 in 2011, and stragglers on dealer lots continue to find new homes even as you read this. So it's no wonder the "new" GM doesn't want us talking about the Sonic as its replacement. But that it is. And thankfully, it's a good one. We'd even be willing to call it great if GM would work on a few of the details.

Start naming Korean automakers. Ready? Go! Okay, there's Hyundai , of course. And its sister company Kia . Daewoo 's been taken over entirely by GM . That's it, right? Almost. Don't forget Renault Samsung .

The French automaker produces its own line of vehicles in South Korea in partnership with electronics giant Samsung. The lineup includes the QM5 (also known as the Renault Koleos ), the small SM3 and SM3 CE, the slightly larger SM5 and this, the new SM7.

The new top-of-the-line Samsung was previewed in concept form earlier this year, and is now ready for its production roll-out. The model it replaces offered 2.3-liter and 3.5-liter versions of Nissan 's ubiquitous VQ engine, and the new model is likely to follow a similar path. The sedan is based on the Nissan Maxima , and may very well be exported outside of its Korean market as a proper Renault . A Daewoo Nubira reported stolen from Msida early today was found completely destroyed by fire at Triq Suffolk in Pembroke this morning. The police said they were informed that a car was on fire at around 8.45 a.m. An inquiry is being held. Another two cars were extensively damaged by fire in Triq il-Parrocca, Imqabba at 2.45 a.m.

In March 2009, civilian protesters led by a baby-faced former disc jockey swarmed through the streets of this hilly capital city. They were calling for the ouster of then-President Marc Ravalomanana for what they saw as literally giving away the farm, selling out his impoverished nation.

The anger was about food. Mr. Ravalomanana reportedly had leased 3.2 million acres - nearly half the island nation's arable land - to a South Korean conglomerate, Daewoo, for 99 years. In theory, it should have been a win-win deal: Daewoo would pay Madagascar $6 billion to grow corn and oil palm, helping South Korea meet both its food-security and bio-fuels needs, while providing Madagascar with revenues and desperately needed jobs.
