They have released a presentation which outlines the 2010 Gartner Hype Cycle on Emerging Technology. Is it an interesting document? It sure is! Does it have an element of surprise? Yes it does! (If you are new to Gartner Hype Cycle, there is a short explanation towards the end of this post) This report from Gartner is meant to guide enterprises on which emerging technologies to invest in. It is suppose to indicate where to put your money so that you can get the maximum benefit.

Computer scientists set new “terabyte barrier” world record

Tarun here to fill you in on the geekiest of the geeky. Computer scientists at the University of California, San Diego surpassed the illusive “terabyte barrier” when they sorted a terabyte (which is 1,000 GB) of data in just sixty seconds. UC computer scientists also tied a world record for fastest data sorting rate in which they sorted one trillion data records in 172 minutes all the while using only a a fourth of the computing power of the other record holder. I’m starting to get envious of these nerds as large file transfers on my computer can sometimes last upwards of forty-five minutes.

Now if you’re a big time company looking to take your web presence even more prevalent, you might want to keep an eye out for these new emerging technologies that will allow users to access data more efficiently.

“If a major corporation wants to run a query across all of their page views or products sold, that can require a sort across a multi-petabyte dataset and one that is growing by many gigabytes every day,” said UC San Diego computer science professor Amin Vahda. “Companies are pushing the limit on how much data they can sort, and how fast. This is data analytics in real time.”

Although what Vahda and crew are doing over at UC might seem tedious and boring, their innovations are pointing towards the future of computing. It might be a competition for them, but it’s win win for consumers everywhere.

A rambling Computerworld report from Cisco's Live! event is bringing us news of even more goodies, beyond the business and home tablets already revealed. In an interview with Marthin De Beer, Senior VP of Cisco's Emerging Technologies Group, De Beer strongly hints at a WiFi enabled Flip Video camera by the end of 2010. While he didn't say it in so many words, he did say, "We didn't buy Flip to have it be only a video recorder," adding, "I look forward to Christmas," when asked about a possible timeline. That seems clear enough.

The conversation then gets muddied when De Beer begins discussing video as a "pervasive play" for Cisco, something that will "ultimately span across everything we do." And in a bid to interoperate with all devices, including Apple's new handset and certainly future iOS devices, De Beer said, "We would absolutely love to integrate with FaceTime ." When, is the question left unanswered. Until then Cisco plans to introduce a mobile Movi iPhone app to the App Store that ties back into Cisco's Tandberg SIP-based video conferencing solution. Now, maybe it's a stretch, but with Cisco slowly creeping into the consumer space, it's hard not to take away a sense that it will be introducing software and devices interoperable with its Silicon Valley neighbor's FaceTime solution in the not too distant future. The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) today announced that it has formed the Tablet Task Force , a group comprised of publishing and interactive industry executives, in order to "help create an infrastructure that would support a variety of rich new advertising opportunities for the emerging technologies of tablets and e-readers". In reality, it's all about the iPad , as evidenced by the focus on Apple's device in this industry report on 'tabvertising' (PDF). Also noteworthy: the IAB actively tries to kill the "myth" that lack of Flash support on the iPad is going to be a problem for advertisers, saying it "incredibly intensive on any computer to run, burning through batteries faster".

Ram Mohan named to IDG's InfoWorld CTO 25 Awards for his work and innovation in deploying Domain Name Security Extensions (DNSSEC) in the Internet's domain name system (DNS).Today Afilias, a leading provider of Internet infrastructure services, announced that its Chief Technology Officer, Ram Mohan, has been named to IDG's InfoWorld CTO 25 Awards for his work and innovation in deploying Domain Name Security Extensions (DNSSEC) in the Internet's domain name system (DNS).

"We congratulate Ram on this prestigious and well deserved recognition of his technology leadership which has improved DNS security across the Internet," said Hal Lubsen, CEO of Afilias. "The deployment of DNSSEC in our systems preceded a broader commitment to DNSSEC worldwide from other parts of the DNS ecosystem, including the Root zone operators, other domain registries, and major ISPs who are now deploying the technology to finally bring the security benefits of DNSSEC to end users."

DNSSEC technology solves Internet security problems like the "Kaminsky bug" (also known as cache poisoning), a highly publicized critical flaw to the DNS which allows malicious third-parties to get control of the DNS communication channel between an end user and a Web site. DNSSEC is an Internet standard developed by the IETF over a decade ago that solves this vulnerability by attaching cryptographic signatures to each DNS query and response. However, large-scale DNSSEC implementation was stalled until .ORG, the Public Interest Registry began work on signing their top-level domain, with technical implementation carried out by Afilias (PIR's technical services provider). Ram Mohan, CTO and Executive Vice President of Afilias, architected the deployment of DNSSEC for .ORG, one of the largest and most trusted domain name registries in the world, completing the signing of the top-level domain in June of 2009.

TANDBERG products finally officially part of Cisco TelePresence portfolio

It looks like the Cisco-TANDBERG acquisition story may finally be put to rest. Cisco announced today that it has completed its voluntary offer for video communications technology company TANDBERG. The full TANDBERG product line is now officially part of the Cisco TelePresence portfolio.

Fredrik Halvorsen, the former CEO of TANDBERG will become senior vice president and leader of the new TelePresence Technology Group within Cisco.

"Today we are celebrating a very important step for our customers in the journey to put people at the center of collaboration and change the way we work," said Marthin De Beer, senior vice president, Emerging Technologies Business Group, Cisco in the release. "We strongly believe that telepresence--the next generation of videoconferencing--along with Cisco's entire rich collaboration portfolio, powers this new way of working where everyone, everywhere, can be more productive through the pervasive use of video and face-to-face collaboration."

Under the terms of the tender offer, following the completion of the compulsory acquisition of shares, Cisco will have purchased all of the outstanding shares of TANDBERG for about $3.3 billion.
