Video: Polish team develops own Volkswagen Polo rally car

News doesn't travel fast in Poland. In fact, very few things travel all that fast in Poland. Sure, the emergence of Robert Kubica

on the Formula One scene has shown well for the Eastern European country, but when he tried his hand at rallying, well... he almost lost it

. (His hand, we mean.) So you can imagine our surprise when we caught wind of a Volkswagen Polo
rally car being developed in Poland.

Apparently nobody told a guy named Paul Dytko that Volkswagen
was already building a Polo-based rally car to challenge the World Rally Championship
. Or that sister-company Skoda
had turned its Fabia
(which shares its underpinnings with the Polo) into an S2000 rally car, too. Not that we're complaining, mind you - there's always room for another fire-breathing, 400-horsepower hatchback in the world. We're just surprised, is all.

Dytko is reportedly trying to raise funds to continue development on the project, and potentially take it to Pikes Peak to prove what it can do. In the mean time, the Polish Polo will be taking on hill climb events across Europe in the coming season, now just weeks away. But if you can't wait that long, there's a good six minutes of rather artfully shot footage of the prototype drifting sideways around what looks like an abandoned airfield after the jump. Check it out.
Continue reading Polish team develops own Volkswagen Polo rally car

Eighteen of the world's top drivers returned this past weekend to Düsseldorf's ESPRIT Arena to contest this year's 2011 Race of Champions
. Up for grabs was glory for each driver's native land in the ROC Nation's Cup on Saturday, as well as individual glory and the title Champion of Champions in Sunday's elimination competition.

The races are held on the 1.2-kilometer ROC parallel track assembled within the confines of ESPRIT Arena, and this year's crop of vehicles with which to compete included the Audi R8 LMS, Skoda Fabia Super 2000, VW Scirocco, KTM X-Bow, RX150 rallycross buggy, ROC single- and two-seat buggies, and, according to RoC's website, a Chevrolet-powered NASCAR Car of Tomorrow race car.
Continue reading SPOILER ALERT: 2011 Race of Champions returns to Düsseldorf [w/video]

Official: Robert Kubica won't be coming back next season

You haven't forgotten about Robert Kubica

already, now have you? Of course not. Who could, after all, forget the first Formula One
driver ever to come out of Poland, and one of the most promising talents in the sport.

Unfortunately, Kubica's career was put on hold earlier this year when he suffered a devastating crash

in a pre-season Italian rally that saw a roadside safety barrier impale his Skoda

Fabia S2000 and partially sever his forearm. The injury took him out of the F1 season that was about to start, and sent the Lotus Renault GP
team looking for a replacement, Nick Heidfeld
brought in for the start of the season before being replaced by Bruno Senna
.

A general lull in news subsequently fell over Kubica's recovery as he recuperated in private, but the team has now issued a statement that he won't be back in the cockpit for the start of next season. His recovery is apparently going well, just not that
well: he's said to be able to move the injured arm, but moving is one thing - the rigors of driving a modern F1 car competitively is quite another. His management and team are discussing an extension of his contract that will expire at the end of next year so that Kubica can come back when he's ready, and are they are keeping the simulators and test cars running for when the time comes.

In the meantime, LRGP will have to choose who will fill Kubica's seat for another season. His Russian teammate, Vitaly Petrov, is confirmed through 2012, but whether the team opts to keep Bruno Senna in the race seat remains to be seen. Renault keeps a large roster of reserve drivers on call - including Romain Grosjean

(who raced for the team in 2009 and is the reigning GP2 champion), Chinese up-and-comer Ho-Pin Tung

(currently in IndyCars), former Le Mans Series and F3000 series champion Jan Charouz and Malaysian driver Fairuz Fauzy - but could, as with Heidfeld, bring in an experienced outside driver to fill the void.
Continue reading Robert Kubica won't be coming back next season

Report: VW CEO Winterkorn happy with rebounding Seat, Skoda

Martin Winterkorn is a happy man: Volkswagen

is putting up big numbers in North America, its latest field of dreams, Audi

, is breaking records every month, there are exciting cars in the pipeline - from Bugatti
down to the XL1
, Porsche's digestion continues, and now Skoda
and especially Seat
are turning in no-questions performance.

It seems Skoda has been on the ups for years, making the most of keen pricing and modern redesigns of the chassis and tech it gets handed down from big brothers VW and Audi. Winterkorn predicts the Czech brand will just about double its 2010 sales by 2018, going from 762,000 to 1.5 million.

Seat, on the other hand, wasn't just on the hotseat

a year-and-a-half ago, phrases like "uncertain future" - code for "possible demise" - were rumbling in the background. A new CEO was brought in, new money and new models were thrown against the wall, and the efforts have stuck. The Spanish brand has hit three strong chords with Winterkorn, with increased sales, strong performance in China and anticipated models due. If this keeps up there won't be much left for him to do but, a la Alexander the Great, break down and cry with no worlds left to conquer.
Skoda, Off-Road, Racing

To the outsider, it would be all too easy to forget that the FIA World Rally Championship
has more than one class. Just like Le Mans
endurance racing has various LMP and GT racing categories, and NASCAR

has the Sprint Cup, Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series, so too does the WRC have more than one tier. So while the Sebastien Loeb and the Citroën

World Rally Team were locking up their seventh title in the top tier of the championship, Skoda
took its first title in the Super 2000 category as its Finnish crew Juho Hänninen and Mikko Markkula won took a class win and 10th overall in the RACC Rally of Spain this past weekend.

So what, who cares, you ask? Well you'd be forgiven for dismissing an overseas automaker (whose products we don't even get here) winning a second-tier rally series that doesn't come here, either. (Mexico's the closest stage on this year's calendar.) But we'll tell you why it matters: Skoda's sister (or parent) company Volkswagen
is entering the top-tier WRC next season with the new Polo R
. And while VW has enjoyed much success in rally-raid events like Dakar, the WRC is an entirely different beast.

In order to prepare for its assault on the most world's foremost rally series, Volkswagen has been looking to Skoda's program to test out everything from machinery to personnel. And given that Skoda - whose motorsport division celebrates its 110th anniversary this year - has come out on top, we could be looking at a very serious contender from Wolfsburg for next year's championship.
Continue reading Skoda hints at what's to come from Volkswagen with S2000 WRC title

Czech automaker Skoda is lining up a new compact car Citigo for India, the small car originally planned for Europe. The company has not been able to crack the bigvolume compact car segment in India with the Fabia, and it now plans to launch new products in the lower-end of the market to corner higher numbers and market share.

Official: Seat is all grown Up! with a Mii of its own [w/video]

    href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/hatchbacks/">Hatchback, SEAT

After a seemingly endless stream of Up!
concept cars rolled out by Volkswagen
over the past few years, the production version is finally upon us. But don't think for even a second that this is the end. No, it's just the beginning, with numerous Up-based models to follow, and not all of them will carry a VW badge.

Skoda
was the first VW division to get its own version called the Citigo
, and now Seat
is following suit with a rebadged version of its own dubbed Mii. Launching in Spain next month before rolling out across Europe in the spring, the Mii will be available initially as a three-door before the five-door variant follows next year.

Overseas buyers will be able to choose between three trim levels, two equipment packages (Chic with chrome trim and Sport with firmer suspension and tinted windows) , two engine specs (1.0-liter threes with 59 or 74 horsepower), two transmissions (manual or robotized) and an optional Economotive pack with stop-start engine management and regenerative braking.

The last time Seat sold a car in this segment, it was the Arosa, a model discontinued in 2005. But while Seat models typically look more dynamic than their Volkswagen and Skoda counterparts (think Ibiza
vs. Polo
and Fabia

), this time - from a styling perspective, anyway - we think we'd stick with the VW. But don't take our word for it: check out the high-resolution images in the gallery, and the video footage and press release after the jump and share your thoughts in Comments.
Continue reading Seat is all grown Up! with a Mii of its own [w/video]

Report: Is Seat getting its own version of the VW Up?

Could this be Seat's version of the Volkswagen
Up!? Skoda
recently showed off its take
on the Up!

runabout, the Citigo, and it's plausible that VW wants to make the biggest statement possible with the little car. The diminutive hatchback could also be employed to help reverse Seat's fortunes - remember, in May of 2010, the Spanish brand was put on notice
about its financial performance. An innovative and inexpensive city car could help round out the planned portfolio expansion.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show
, our sister UK site reported

that Seat was working on a sporty version of the Up! that would be "good to drive." However, there wasn't any additional information at the source site, so we aren't sure how much of the image above is an actual photo and how much is rendering. We expect it would still come, as the rest, with either the 59- or 74-horsepower, 1.0-liter three-clinder engines.
<a

Report: Skoda nixes prospect of building a sportscar

We have to admit we were more than a little bit intrigued when Skoda
showed up at Wörthersee this year with the Fabia RS 2000 roadster
you see here. The concept essentially took the company's S2000 rally machine, gave it a fresh coat of Kermit and chopped off the roof... with four seats and four doors still intact. But could such a vehicle ever be produced?

According to the latest reports from across the pond, the answer, quite simply, is "no". Apparently Skoda is fixated on reaching its sales targets, and while something could certainly be said for a halo vehicle - particularly one based on one of its top-selling volume models - the Czech automaker is not keen on distracting itself from the task at hand. (We'll just have to admire it from the updated high-res image gallery, then.)

That's a bit of a shame, especially since the VW

subsidiary's line-up is, well, rather conservative. But don't go thinking that Skoda is about to give up on performance-oriented models altogether, though: the company will continue developing and producing its vRS
line of hot hatches and sedans, like the Fabia, Octavia
and even the upcoming production version of the MissionL concept debuted in Frankfurt
. A Superb

vRS performance sedan, however, is reportedly not in the cards, as the executive saloon is just too big to fit the bill.
<a

Official: Skoda unveils Volkswagen Up!-based Citigo

    href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/hatchbacks/">Hatchback, Skoda

<img height="381"

This is the all-new Skoda

Citigo, and if you're thinking that it looks rather familiar, that's because its Volkswagen
-badged kin recently debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show
. That's right, the long-rumored
Skoda version of Volkswagen's new Up!
city car has finally arrived.

Buyers will have a choice of two 1.0-liter three-cylinder engines - one with 59 horsepower, the other with a 74 hp and a blistering 106 mph top speed - both mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Powerful they are not, but these three-bangers should prove to be extremely efficient, with Skoda quoting fuel economy numbers of 62.8 and 60.1 miles per gallon, respectively (on the European cycle).

Being a Skoda, the Citigo will go on sale in its home market of the Czech Republic this fall, with the rest of Europe getting the car next summer. Follow the jump for Skoda's official release.
Continue reading Skoda unveils Volkswagen Up!-based Citigo

Skoda
has taken its place on the floor of the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show
, and Volkswagen's Czech arm has brought a new concept sedan along for the ride. Called MissionL, the crisp but conservative Skoda four-door concept is an almost-ready peek at the upcoming production model.

The Skoda MissionL is expected to slot in the lineup between the Fabia and the Octavia, models North Americans know best Volkswagen
Polo
and Jetta
derivatives. The automaker plans to launch its MissionL first in India, with units arriving there by the end of 2011. After that, Skoda will provide the MissionL to markets in Europe, Russia and China sometime in 2012.

Skoda is using the MissionL concept to provide hints at the styling direction for future Skoda models. These new models are stepping stones that the automaker will have to land on as it attempts to hit a heady 1.5 million global sales by the year 2018.
Continue reading Skoda MissionL concept provides glimpse at Czech automaker's future

Official: Skoda teases MissionL concept ahead of Frankfurt debut

Of all of the divisions under the Volkswagen
Group's vast corporate umbrella, Skoda
's wouldn't exactly be what you'd call the most exciting. But the Czech automaker is working on improving that. Skoda plans on releasing a new product every six months for the next two years, and this is the first in its new model offensive.

Called the MissionL, what you see here is a concept car, but one in which - according to Skoda, at least - will lead directly to a new production model. The styling already looks edgier than the company's existing range of models, and will be unveiled next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show
.

After that, the MissionL is set to be turned into a new production five-door liftback targeted at the European, Russian and Chinese markets, with a sedan version headed to India. We'll reserve judgement for when we see the show car up close, but if this is a sign of what's to come from Skoda, it looks to be a rather sharp sign indeed.
Continue reading Skoda teases MissionL concept ahead of Frankfurt debut

If you thought a 202-mph run
seemed like a hell of a pace for a Škoda
Octavia, hold on to your hats, folks, because the Czech automaker's team at Bonneville has set a new record.

With a beefed-up turbocharger and intercooler, enhanced aerodynamics and the requisite safety modifications, the 600-horsepower Octavia vRS Bonneville Special
set the record in the 2.0-liter forced-induction production car category with a certified 227.070 mph run. Actually, the Škoda hit a top speed of 228.647 mph through the traps on the return run, but as per regulations, that was averaged out with the 225.513 mph it hit on the five-mile run out across the salt flats.

Any way you look at it, that's one heck of a run, claiming the record for Škoda and helping it celebrate the tenth anniversary of its vRS performance badge. Follow the jump for the official announcement and scope out the updated image gallery for more.
Continue reading Škoda tops 227 mph, claims 2.0-liter production speed record at Bonneville

Official: Škoda Octavia vRS blows past 200 mph at Bonneville

There are places you expect to find a Škoda

, and places you don't. European streets, for example, fall squarely into the former category. Dried up lake beds in the United States, however, belong firmly in the latter. But someone forgot to tell that to the people who make the Czech Volkswagen
derivatives.

In between ripping the top off the Fabia
for the Wörthersee show and preparing to enter

the British Touring Car Championship, that cadre of lead-footed Škoda personnel announced their intention
to take the Octavia to the slat flats at Bonneville. The occasion was the tenth anniversary of the automaker's vRS performance brand, and while their target - breaching 200 miles per hour - may have seemed distant to anyone who's ever sat in the old Jetta with new clothes, they got theirs.

The world's fastest Škoda achieved an official run of 202.15 mph four days ahead of schedule at the [currently ongoing] Bonneville Speed Week. The Octavia vRS with which they did it was aerodynamically optimized, dropped closer to the ground, reinforced with a roll cage and other safety equipment and fitted with a larger turbocharger and intercooler. Otherwise, however, it's the same Octavia vRS available at dealers overseas.

Far from calling it a day and heading back to the Czech Republic, Škoda's Bonneville team are sticking around in pursuit of the 2.0-liter production car land speed record, which currently stands at 216 mph. We'll be watching, but in the meantime you can follow the jump for the full press release and scope out the images in the gallery for more.
Continue reading Škoda Octavia vRS blows past 200 mph at Bonneville

We're not really sure why, but a Skoda
has been sacrificed to recreate Robert Kubica's near-fatal February rally crash

that threw his future into question. Using a completely stock Skoda Fabia, they ran the car into an Armco barrier at about the same angle and clip Kubica was going (you may recall that this same crash was already subject to the computer simulator treatment
).

Simply put, the results are horrifying. This video proves suggests that not only was Kubica extremely lucky during his Andora incident, but the structural improvements to his race car almost certainly saved his bacon. Click past the jump to see the video for yourself.
Continue reading Robert Kubica's disastrous rally crash recreated with real Skoda

Folks down at the salt flats in Utah are used to seeing all manner of machinery making high-speed runs, but this year they're set to get an eye-full of European machinery. Not only is Skoda
taking a modified Octavia
to Bonneville
, but Renault
is now set to join the fray with a unique adaptation of the classic Renault 4.

The iconic car celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and one of the ways the French automaker plans on marking the occasion is by taking this modified example to the salt flats to see what she'll do.

Underneath the classic bodywork sits a 290-horsepower turbo four from the 1983 Renault 5 touring car, with the gearbox and front brakes from a Renault 25 GTX Turbo and the rear brakes from a Clio. It's also got a full roll cage, racing bucket with harness, fire extinguisher and parachute.

The special 4 was prepared by a special team called the Triplets of Bonneville, in a collaboration between Renault's classic and motorsport divisions, and is expected to top 280 km/h (174 mph) when it hits the salt mid-August.
<a
There's no doubt about it. Summer is here, and Volkswagen

has gone crazy with open-air motoring. The German auto giant rolled in to its 30th-annual hot-hatch festival at Lake Wörthersee in Austria with the Skoda Fabia RS 2000
roadster. Then it dropped the top on a Golf R Cabriolet
concept. But just in case that wasn't enough, VW also brought out a second Golf GTI Cabriolet.

Like the Golf R Cabrio, the formula for the GTI Cabrio is simplicity itself: take one new Golf Cabrio
and one GTI
, mix 'em together and this is what you get: 207 turbocharged horsepower to redo your coif in the open air. Just for good measure, VW also outfitted the show car with a full body kit, dropped suspension and special 19-inch wheels. The Firespark Metallic paint is offset by the high-gloss black trim, a color combo continued into the cabin decked out in black leather - Wörthersee is, after all, in the Austrian province of Corinthia - with red and grey top-stitching.

Unfortunately, like the Golf R cabrio and the Skoda roadster, this is strictly a show car for the time being, but if enough fans demand it, the GTI Cabrio could become a reality. So which would you rather drive home from your local dealership? Check out the images in the high-res gallery, scope out the full press release after the jump, and cast your vote below.
Report: Volkswagen Group's roadster program coming into focus
These days, an auto giant like the Volkswagen
Group can hardly justify a new platform unless it can amortize the cost across numerous variants. Fortunately, VW has enough brands in its portfolio to do exactly that.

Just as the same platform underpins the Volkswagen Polo
, Audi A1
, Skoda Fabia
and Seat Ibiza

(none of which, of course, are available in North America), and another underpins the Volkswagen Touareg
, Audi Q7
and Porsche Cayenne
, so will the company's next mid-engine roadster platform be distributed into numerous models across the corporate tree. The project has been several years in the making, but as development speeds towards production, Autocar
has some details on what to expect.

The platform is expected to breed a production version of the above-pictured Volkswagen BlueSport that started it all a couple of years ago, as well as an Audi
R4 and Porsche
550 revival. While both the Audi and Porsche are expected to offer 2.0-liter turbo fours, the engines are tipped to be entirely different: an inline for the Audi and a flat-four boxer for the Porsche. The R4 is rumored to get a diesel powerplant as well, while the VW is expected to start with a 1.4-liter turbo four. Output for the different versions is expected to range from 170 to 380 horsepower.

Power isn't all that will separate one model from the other, however. The styling, for one, is expected to take different directions, the Volkswagen fitting into that brands straight-edge styling language, the R4 taking its sharp cues from the e-tron concept and the Porsche taking a more rounded, retro approach reminiscent of the 550 Spyder of yore.

Pricing and market position will also define one model as distinct from another, the Volkswagen targeting the Mazda MX-5
, the Audi taking the place that BMW

's Z3 once held (and could once again), with the Porsche taking top position just under the next-generation Boxster
. In other words, no lack of choices, and all of them with the wind auf dein kopf
.
<a
