Skype updates Android app for Verizon users, lets you keep the WiFi on

Well, it looks like you still won't be able to actually make calls over WiFi, but Verizon Android users can now at least keep their WiFi connection active while using Skype Mobile -- something that was curiously not possible before. That's just one of the improvements in the latest version of the app (also updated for BlackBerry), which also includes features like incoming caller ID, support for copy and paste and emoticons in IM conversations, and the ability to automatically set your location as your mood message.

We've had a good time with OnLive's "instant-play" game streaming service so far, but if there's one thing we'd change, it would be the fact that it only supports wired internet connections. Thankfully, there are enough similarly minded folks out there, prompting the service to single out WiFi support as a "top development priority" to be introduced in beta form before October.

OnLive also announced today that it is extending its Founding Members program yet again (it was due to end this coming weekend), offering a free year of service and a guaranteed $4.95 monthly fee thereafter to anyone who signs up before January 1, 2011.

For those who are already members, Labor Day weekend (that's September 4-6 -- only two days away!) will bring with it a sale on all titles in OnLive's catalog, to the tune of 50 percent off each and every one. A full list of games available can be found here. If you're keen to try out the service (or get a preview of its WiFi support) the company will be exhibiting at PAX Prime this weekend, September 3-5.

The Tweeting Wifi Body Scale Scores 3 Million Euros

Withings
, the Paris-based company behind the famous tweeting wifi body scale
, has just scored 3 million euros from French VC firm, Ventech

. It's the company's first round of funding and will be used primarily for the development of 2 new products, which should come out within the next 6 months.

For anyone who isn't already familiar with the company's first product, the tweeting wifi body scale, it's a terrific wifi-connected device that tracks your weight. May sound simple but it can recognize up to 8 users and allows you to transfer your weight information to a computer, iPhone or iPad - which is where the Tweeting comes from, obviously. The product launched officially last year on June 25 goes for €129 in France and is a great little way to track a fitness program or diet.<img

It's not just the <a

Unfortunately, there's no pictures this time around (internal or otherwise), but there are a number of test reports that confirm that the device does indeed pack Bluetooth and dual-band WiFi (802.11 b/g/n at 2.4GHz and 802.11 a/n at 5GHz). And in case you're wondering where the label goes -- it goes there.

Samsung Galaxy Tab falls into FCC hands with GSM radio frequencies, 5GHz dual-band WiFi

When Samsung's 7-inch tablet finally sees the states, it might indeed be more than a giant Galaxy S
-- for one thing, it may have Froyo

, but for another, it could have faster, more building-penetrating WiFi than most comparable devices on the market. That's because when the Galaxy Tab

hit the FCC by the name "SHW-M180S," it came loaded with dual-band 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi capable of speeds up to 150Mbps. It also intriguingly sports the GSM 1900 radio frequency, meaning an AT&T launch might be in the cards alongside the CDMA one
rumored for Verizon

. Browsing through the WiFi Alliance databases in an attempt to track the tablet down, we spotted both a "GT-P1000T" and a "GT-P1000L," each with dual-band WiFi, suggesting that there are multiple versions in the works... and the Global Certification Forum shows one of them actually has quad-band GSM and HSDPA connectivity. Not bad, Samsung. Now, let's hear about battery life.
<a
In case you thought installing SYNC
into Ford

vehicles was a ho-hum-whatever affair, that's not the case - Ford puts a lot of thought into it. The Blue Oval's latest assembly line advance is to have SYNC's infotainment software installed into the 2011 Ford Edge

via WiFi. Made possible by the the latest version of SYNC with WiFi access, the new process allows Ford to save money on parts and inventory by using a common module among vehicles in different cars and made in different plants. After the Edge, the Lincoln MKX
and 2011 Explorer

Vodafone launches R201 mobile WiFi hotspot in the UK, Three shrugs

<a

Vodafone's no stranger to the mobile broadband
scene, but until now, British road warriors have had to rely on Three

for a mobile WiFi hotspot solution. Enter the R201 modem -- just as we heard in our exclusive leak
last month, said device from Huawei

can host a party of up to five WiFi devices, and it'll do HSDPA 7.2 Mbps plus HSUPA 5.76 Mbps for up to four hours on a single charge. Sadly, there's no pay-and-go option just yet, so buyers will have to live under Vodafone's

roof for 18 months with a choice of three room sizes: £15 ($23.51), £20 ($31.34) or £25 ($39.18) for 3GB, 4GB and 5GB (with free device) of monthly bandwidth, respectively. It sure is a fair bit of investment here, so before you hit the buy button, be sure to keep an eye out for our forthcoming review later this week.
Continue reading Vodafone launches R201 mobile WiFi hotspot in the UK, Three shrugs

Hit a Sam's Club

on a weekend afternoon and you'll notice not everyone is there to stock up on raisin bran and Fruit Loops. Some come to sample the wares; running to toaster ovens staffed by kind old ladies and tearing freshly warmed Hot Pockets from their arthritic hands. Soon shoppers will have another thing to pilfer: the internet. Sam's Club is working with AT&T to add free WiFi to all its stores by November, allowing shoppers to tell their Facebook friends how many bulk packs of toilet paper they can stuff in those giant shopping carts. The store will also enable connectivity for its IPTVs

so that customers can sample Pandora on the like before deciding which set to take home. No word on whether stores will feature associates pulling WiFi access codes out of toaster ovens in batches of 10 at a time, but we sure hope so -- that kind of thing just adds to the fun of the hunt.
<a

Sam’s Club is one of the more popular warehouse stores around America and it looks like the giant company is going to offer in-store WiFi access to all its customers. In an effort to showcase WiFi enabled TVs, Sam’s Club hopes its customers will utilize the Internet functions on the TV with the in-store WiFi. Expect new 3D TVs to be on demonstration in the coming weeks across all stores as well. Sam’s Club is encouraging prospective TV customers to use Pandora, Facebook, and other web apps on the TV. In addition, the WiFi will allow customers to compare prices, and since Sam’s Club prides itself on low prices, it feels the price comparison will sway in its favor.

Starting in November, the in-store WiFi will be rolled out to its 500 stores across the United States. Sam’s Club plans to train its Tech Experts in order to provide 24/7 complimentary service to its customers. Lastly, in September, Sam’s Club will launch an app for each major mobile OS: Android, BlackBerry, and iPhone. The Sam’s Club app would allow users to read up on product reviews, search for products in the store, and receive exclusive member discounts.

China Unicom getting WiFi-enabled iPhone 3GS next week, iPhone 4 on September 1?

Remember that WAPI
-compliant version of the iPhone approved back in May
? Yeah, well, China Unicom

is just now getting around to rolling it out, promising it'll be available next week in the form of an 8GB 3GS for an incredible 4,999 yuan (about $739). As far as we can tell, the phone will be compatible both with straight WiFi and WAPI wireless networks, which is a big step for the country -- traditionally, the Chinese iPhone has been WiFi-free while the iPod touch has gone unfettered, the result of bureaucracy, product categorization, and strange laws that don't fly in many other locales. On a related note, rumor has it that the iPhone 4 -- presumably also with WiFi / WAPI -- is on track for a September 1 release, so if the 3GS is feeling a little too 2009 for you, you may not have long to wait.
<a

Sony Ericsson X10 firmware update introduces wildly annoying WiFi bug

Apparently, the latest firmware update for Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10
(which, yes, is still based on Android 1.6
) does more harm than good -- if you're frequently using WiFi and you find yourself in weak cellular coverage, anyhow. Basically, any time your cellular signal drops to zero then bounces back, WiFi turns itself off, which is particularly brutal considering that a weak signal is probably why you're leaning on WiFi in the first place. We don't have details on what X10s are affected, but R2BA026 sounds like the offending version -- so if you see it, we'd probably stay far away until SE manages to push another update.

The Kindle 3 is already seeing tremendous demand that is stressing Amazon. After only being announced last week, both the Wifi and Wifi + 3G versions have been completely sold out with the Wifi not expected to catch up with demand until September 4th.

The new reader has started a fire in the ereader market by lowering costs considerably in the space. With the starting prices for the Wifi and Wifi+3G being $139 and $189 respectively, it is no wonder why everyone wants to get their hands on the slim-downed sequel.

We're guessing that the past six months have dragged on (or zipped by, depending on viewpoint) for the folks at Infinitec
as they waited for this day, but the device we first spotted
at the Engadget trailer

during CES 2010 is finally up for pre-order. Hailed as the world's first "infinite USB flash drive," this ad hoc streaming device enables any two locally networked devices to send content to one another

, and as of today, those who have longed for just this thing can get in line. The startup's also taking this opportunity to gloat about the "dual-WiFi" capabilities included (a video explanation awaits you past the break), which essentially enables an IUM-equipped laptop to connect to another device while retaining its live connection to the web. Hit the source link to part ways with your $129, and if you buy in early, you'll be gifted with gratis worldwide shipping come August 31st. And you can't beat that deal with a stick, USB or otherwise.
Continue reading Infinitec opens pre-orders for 'infinite' USB memory drive, touts dual-WiFi

NetJets begins Aircell in-flight WiFi installations, won't stop anytime soon

    align="right" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/netjets-interior.jpg" />
It's one thing to expect in-flight WiFi

on a commercial flight serving two or three hundred addicted peons, but how on Earth has it taken until now for NetJets to hop onboard this bandwagon? For those unaware, NetJets hosts the world's largest fractional fleet of business-oriented aircraft, and those that lay claim to portions of its herd are amongst the most wealthy this world has to offer. Currently, the outfit has just over 800 planes, and starting next month over 250 of them (in the midsize and large-cabin categories) will be equipped with Aircell
's high speed internet service. In time, NetJets is planning to have "all future fleet aircraft, including light cabin models, delivered from the factory with high speed internet," and we're guessing that the jetsetters who drop the Benjamins to have their own plane are as anxious as ever for the future to be now. After all, who wouldn't
want to tweet images of filet mignon from 35,000 feet?
Continue reading NetJets begins Aircell in-flight WiFi installations, won't stop anytime soon

Samsung unveils WiFi-enabled ST80 camera, swiveling-lens HMX-E10 pocket camcorder

Camera releases are somewhat a by-the-numbers thing with so many different variations being released by numerous companies throughout the year. Samsung

's pair here does have some interesting standout features, but one at a time. The 14.2 megapixel ST80 point-and-shoot boasts WiFi capabilities for email / direct upload of images (DLNA supported, to boot). It's also got 3x optical zoom, a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen, 720p 30fps H.264 video recording, and Sammy's "Smart Crop" feature for taking angled shots and "straightening them up" (i.e. a banner that is fixed to look straight on). This one's due out September 2010 for a penny under $250. Then there's the HMX-E10 pocket camcorder with an impressive 270-degree swiveling lens and 1920 x 1080 30p H.264 HD video recording. That touchscreen you see is a 2.7-inch LCD, the lens has 2x digital zoom, connectivity is HDMI and USB (also used for charging), and release details are September as well, for $199.99. You know the drill: product shots are below, press releases after the break.

Gallery: <a

Hack brings WiFi to Sprint Palm Pixi courtesy of Verizon Pixi Plus radio board swap

We can't say it's the most practical of hacks, but it looks like Sprint Palm Pixi users eager to add some much-needed WiFi to their device do have at least one option. As demonstrated by PreCentral forum member gitit20, all you have to do is find a Verizon Pixi Plus somewhere, pull out its radio board, swap it with the one in your Sprint Pixi, and run the Sprint webOS Doctor application to get everything back in working order. As you can see above, the two radio boards are identical apart from the missing WiFi chip, and there's apparently no extra fiddling with serial numbers or anything required. Head on past the break for the whole thing on video.

Looks like Verizon's about to take its mobile data game worldwide -- we just got this snap of the "FiveSpot," a "global ready" mobile WiFi hotspot . That certainly sounds like a hybrid CDMA / UMTS mobile hotspot to us, which makes sense -- Verizon already sells a bunch of world phones with dual CDMA and GSM radios, so a globetrotting riff on the MiFi
fits right in. Based on the name, we'd guess this supports five simultaneous users, but that's a guess. No idea when this will hit or how much it might cost, but we'll keep our eyes open -- check the box shot after the break.
