Remember that Motorola Xyboard 8.2
WiFi-only model that just went on sale
? Well it just paid a visit to our friends at the FCC who promptly tore it down and took a few shots -- you know -- in the name of science

. The pictures show the main board, the front and rear camera modules, various flex cables, the rear housing and display chassis, the battery, the capacitive digitizer and screen, the speaker and both antennae (WiFi / Bluetooth plus GPS). It looks like the tablet received minor modifications to the WiFi / Bluetooth antenna involving judicious application of Kapton tape. Go figure. Want to see more?

These cufflinks are either the ultimate in 007 gear for the average man or the geekiest cufflinks on the planet. Either way, they’re at least dead useful, unlike normal pairs. Brookstone’s polished silver cufflinks each hide a USB drive that offers 2GB of storage and Wi-Fi hotspot capability. It’s not clear if they can both [...]

Because deep down, all you've ever really

wanted are smartphone adjustable WiFi-LED light tubes controlled by a remote server out in the ether. Snarkiness aside, that's exactly what Japan's Net LED Technology Corporation has done with a lighting system

it lovingly calls NetLED. The setup isn't for frugal types as, before even purchasing lights, you'll need to plunk down 60,000 yen (around $780) for a netLED router that serves as an intermediary between those fixtures and the company's remote server. The addition of that hardware enables the 19,800 yen (around $260) WiFi-equipped 40W LED arrays

to be monitored and adjusted remotely via a web browser or an iPhone app. And, if WiFi tubes are too rich for your blood, each WiFi-toting fixture can be paired with up to three cheaper WiFi-less slaves that cost 14,000 yen (around $182). It's complex and pricey stuff, yet the company estimates you'll cut energy consumption by half after you amass 200 units. Those brave enough to find out, can take the plunge February 20th when it all goes on sale -- just let us know how you fare, cool? In the meantime, get up close and personal with a shot of the light emitters themselves after the break.
Continue reading NetLED WiFi-enabled, app-controllable, LED light tubes come to Japan

A new law passed in Malaysia's largest city, Kuala Lumpur, this month will require all food and beverage outlets to provide wireless internet access to customers by April of this year. The law makes WiFi access for customers a requirement for food operators when applying for a new license for a restaurant or renewing an existing license. Cafes, pubs, bars and club lounges are also required to provide WiFi services, the mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Tan Sri Fuad Ismail, was quoted as saying to a Malaysian newspaper recently.

A projector from Oregon Scientific

, you say? Nope, it's not one of those clock and weather projectors, but rather an actual DLP pico projector. At CES 2012, the company was kind enough to show us an early prototype of its Portable WiFi Projector that'll handle FWVGA (854 x 480) at 1,000:1 contrast and a good 80 lumens of brightness (50 if powered by USB alone). Apparently at 3.2 meters from the wall, such combination should produce a clear 120-inch wide picture in total darkness, so we shall see. The final unit -- dummy pictured above -- will be slightly smaller than the working prototype, yet it'll pack a 90-degree hinge (not

, of course), a focus slide, a 3.5mm headphone jack and some buttons for brightness, power and volume.
GoBandit WiFi helmet cam hands-on

<a

Extreme sports junkies are no strangers to the vast selection of helmet cams

just waiting for them to record their wicked shenanigans, so we were expecting to see nothing drastically new when we stopped by the GoBandit booth at CES 2012

. There was one thing, however, that stuck out to us as we played with the company's top-tier model, the GoBandit Live
: WiFi. And let's be very careful with words here, because these full HD cams don't find WiFi hotspots -- they are
WiFi hotspots. This means that not only can you upload your vids to another device, you can broadcast them live. Here's how it works: download the companion iOS app (the company's working to have Android compatibility soon), activate the cam's WiFi and either load your vids or view them live. The model GoBandit had on hand was still a prototype model, so unfortunately we weren't able to put it to the full test yet, though we at least were able to snap a few pics for the gallery below. Available in March, it comes in two flavors: the Live, which offers GPS and WiFi, and the Race, which doesn't. The pair will go for $419 and $319, respectively.
Gobandit Live with WiFi offers thrill-seekers quicker sharing, speedier self-indulgence

Two years ago, the Gobandit GPS HD
brought an action camcorder

to the masses that actively tracked location, speed and altitude. In the same tradition, the Gobandit Live brings an expanded set of features geared toward adrenaline junkies, which include a gyroscopic sensor, 1080p capture at 30fps, a 170-degree f/2.8 wide angle lens and -- oh yeah, WiFi. While this last feature certainly won't be usable on the mountain or along the trail, it allows clips to be uploaded instantly once the camera is back within range. For those who'd rather do without WiFi, the Gobandit Race provides an otherwise similar feature set at a lower price. Both will be available in the US and Canada beginning March 1st, and will retail for $419 and $319, respectively. The full PR is just beyond the break, though if you want to learn more, check the company's website instead.
Continue reading Gobandit Live with WiFi offers thrill-seekers quicker sharing, speedier self-indulgence

After announcing a new DualView camera just before CES 2012, Samsung added to its list of new models a few days later with five new cameras.

Samsung is focusing on WiFi capabilities with three of these new models (those with an "F" in the name), which claim to simplify the ability of the cameras to make use of WiFi. These cameras, which Samsung is calling SMART cameras, should make it easier to upload images to social networking sites through a WiFi connection. The cameras include:

Samsung SmartHome WiFi Washer and Dryer hands-on (video)

      href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/samsung-smarthome-wifi-washer-and-dryer-hands-on-video/">

We've all needed to keep the laundry going while we're out and about. Samsung
is looking to help with that and let us in on their plans at yesterday's presser
. The WF457 washer and dryer set houses an 8-inch touchscreen, is WiFi-enabled and can be controlled from inside or outside of the home via the SmartHome app. With your smartphone or tablet, you can choose the cycle, duration and set-up notifications on your mobile device once the job is done. Neither are available as of yet, but rest assured, this will be a neat piece of tech you should consider. Want a demo? Head on to the gallery below and video.

After spending some time controlling a few eight second demo cycles, we were pretty impressed with the system as a whole. Amazingly enough, our load of towels was completely dry. The app worked well and stayed connected for the most part -- granted, we were in the midst of the CES WiFi crossfire. We did encounter some issues when controlling the dryer with a smartphone and then interacting with the appliance's touchscreen. The SmartHome tech seemed to only like to take orders from one source at a time. Other than that, everything went off without a hitch and the phone notification feature is quite a nice touch. Either way, not having to get up to fluff those 400-thread-count sheets is a luxury we can all enjoy in some capacity.
Samsung's WiFi-enabled cameras hands-on

While scouring Samsung's booth at CES's Digital Experience for that glorious 55-inch OLED set this evening, we came across a table full of new WiFi-enabled cameras and a camcorder. The logic behind the WiFi feature is that it enables direct access to Microsoft's Sky Drive, E-Mail, PC Auto Backup, remote viewfinding and of course Facebook, Youtube, and Picasa right from your phone. The top of the line $379 WB850F -- the F designation indicates it has WiFi -- has a 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, 21x optical zoom, 3-inch AMOLED display, shoots 1080p HD, and even has GPS with POI. The 16 megapixel $199 DV300F was also on hand with a 5x optical zoom, a 3-inch display and shoots 720p video. Samsung's 14 megapixel $229 WB15F also sports a 3-inch AMOLED screen, and shoots in full HD with up to 18x optical zoom. The tied-for-least-expensive $199 ST200F still puts in a showing with a 16 megapixel shooter, 10x optical zoom while still capturing HD video at 720p. Samsung launched one HD camcorder, the $299 Q20 which packs 20x optical zoom, time lapse, and HD recording at 1080i @ 60fps. All of the cameras have a similar heft and are built with similar materials which should help narrow people's purchase decisions to looking at what features they want and what's affordable. On to the gallery!

Gallery: <a

Liked those 'iconic' corners but not willing to foot the LTE bill? You'll be glad to hear that WiFi-only versions of the Xyboard duo will arrive at these shores on January 19th. Each model lops $200 off Verizon's LTE models, with the 8.2-inch model priced at $400 for 16GB or double the space for $500. Its bigger brother is priced at $500 for 16GB of storage and $600 for 32GB. Smitten with the idea of an IR emitter in a tablet? The pre-order page beckons below.
